Baseball and hockey collide with the Toledo Walleye announcing today that defenseman Kevin Gibson has agreed to terms with the team for the 2017-18 season. He is expected to be in the lineup tonight for the Walleye in Worcester.
The son of former Detroit Tigers great, MLB outfielder and National League Manager of the Year Kirk Gibson started this season in Europe playing for the Milton Keynes Lighting appearing in 10 contests with one goal, four assists and 11 penalty minutes. Gibson does have ECHL experience playing the last two seasons with the Quad City Mallards including a 30 point (2G, 28A) effort over 64 contests last year. He was also one of the best players last year posting a plus 32 rating.
Prior to turning professional, the 27-year-old spent four years playing college hockey for the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point. In 117 games for the Pointers, Gibson scored 18 goals with 65 assists for 83 points with 68 penalty minutes. The Grosse Pointe, MI native was named WIAC Player of the Year during his senior season (2014-15) while serving as an assistant captain while posting a point per game with 32 (8G, 24A) in just 31 games played.
