Walleye shoot past Wings 2-1 in a shootout
(Kalamazoo, MI) Goaltender Hannu Toivonen stopped four of five Wings shooters in the shootout as Toledo wins 2-1 Saturday night in Kalamazoo. Toledo has an overall record of 20-39-3-2 and is 10-18-3-1 on the road.
Neither team would dent the scoreboard in the first period of play with Toledo out shooting Kalamazoo 10-5 in the period.
“Quick, smart plays was the message going into tonight,” said Head Coach Dan Watson. “We did a good job all night slowing down their offense and giving ourselves a chance in this game. I was very proud of the effort our guys showed all game long to get this win.”
The Kalamazoo Wings would strike first when Nick Sirota beat Walleye goaltender Hannu Toivonen with a wrist shot from the right circle.
Toledo would tie the game at a goal apiece when Brett Perlini scored his 9th goal of the season at 12:21 of the third period. Neither team would get a goal the rest of regulation time and overtime. In the shootout, goals by Max Shalunov and Jimmy McDowell would lead Toledo to the win.
Walleye Notes: Goaltender Hannu Toivonen made 25 saves on 26 shots on goal, plus he stopped four of five Kalamazoo shooters. Toivonen has a record 11-13-0-0 on the season and has stopped 10 of 12 shooters in shootouts this season. Toledo is 4-7-0 vs. Kalamazoo this season.
